Motivating an employee is not as difficult as one may believe. There are only a few simple things that must always be followed; starting with respect, if an employee knows they are respected, they will give 100%.

Pay Employees What They are Worth

William Cafarella believes part of respecting your employees is paying them a wage that they are worthy of. If you pay your employees minimum wage, you are going to get minimum wage work. That also includes tardiness, call-offs, no-shows, and often poor/sloppy work. If you pay your employees well, you will likely get employees who show up on time and do good work.


Don’t let your employees feel like they are all alone. Encourage teamwork, and everyone wins and feels appreciated.

Teamwork makes the job go smoother and sometimes faster. It’s all about working together to achieve the same goal. When you have a team of people striving to reach the same goal, it creates a friendly work environment that is extremely important for everyone.

Incentives and Goals

When you create goals for your employees, it helps keep everyone stays focused and the work moving along smoothly and to the best of all your employee’s abilities and completed in a timely fashion.

Adding an incentive to accomplishing the goals is even better. Employees generally enjoy an incentive. When you offer an incentive that all your employees can enjoy, not just one or two, they are likely to work even harder and with a positive attitude.

Comfortable Work Environment

William Cafarella also suggests making the work environment a comfortable place for the employees. Offer free water, coffee, tea, and snacks. Allow for a 40 or 45-minute lunch break instead of the traditional 30 minutes.

The employees will have longer to recharge their batteries before returning to work. They may even have time to run to the pharmacy or knock off any errand they must do after work during the extra lunchtime that will undoubtedly make them happier and more motivated if they know they can go straight home after work instead of having to run an errand. Put a TV in the break room and magazines, so they can relax. Once a month, order pizza or a meal of some kind and show them they are appreciated. These motivational options are inexpensive and will keep your employees motivated and happy.

Good employees are hard to come by, so when you find the cream of the crop, keep them motivated, happy, and well paid. So, they stick around for the long haul.
